Generally strong performances buoy but can't really save this sort-of-amusing show that aims for the irreverence of Urinetown but is rarely that clever. Wesley Tunison and Danny Fetter have fun in multiple roles, Jared Reed distinguishes well between nerdy Melvin and his hero alter ego, and Kim Dalton displays sharp comic timing plus pulls off the neat trick of believably playing blind. Even the stage crew gets some laughs. But the book is more silly-dumb than silly-funny, the score is mediocre, and it does wear on. Excellent costumes. I saw show 1, so I assume sound issues will be fixed and pacing will tighten up.... full review

For most theatregoers in LA this will be the first opportunity they’ve had to see the off-Broadway hit and it is hilarious. Nothing serious here. It’s all big comedy and big fun by an irresistible cast of five that really delivers the goods. Director/choreographer Janet Miller wins with this silly 2-hour rock musical where everything is a send-up and nothing is safe from a joke, not even New Jersey (especially New Jersey). Corey Hirsch’s live 5-piece onstage band is a bonus. ... full review

The Toxic Avenger is the epitome of a geek turned hero story in the most unconventional, and yet, most New Jersey way. The Toxic Avenger: The Musical turns this unconventional geek to hero story in a rock musical filled with toxic waste, crime, and love. Set in the Tromaville, a toxic waste-ridden town off the New Jersey Turnpike, Melvin Ferd the Third, the biggest nerd in town, wants to clean up the streets and rid the town of its toxic nature. Melvin is but a huge geek in love with the town librarian Sarah, who happens to be blind. When the mayor of Tromaville discovers that Melvin knows she is behind all of the toxic waste, she sets her minions out to scare Melvin into dropping his quest to clean up Tromaville. Unfortunately, being a ... full review

A nerdy earth scientist named Melvin falls in love with Sarah, a blind librarian. The romance is cut short when Melvin is dumped into a vat of toxic goo; turning him into a mutant with a six pack. Drats! Toxie then goes off on a rampage around town to take down the mayor’s evil toxicity plans and impress Sarah. The Toxic Avenger Musical premiered Off-Broadway in 2009 to mixed reviews, and is now receiving the Hollywood Fringe treatment thanks to Good People Theatre Company. The Toxic Avenger Musical is by far the most polished musical at this year’s Hollywood Fringe Festival. Not because it has already been published, instead of it being a new work (like most fringe shows.) It’s slick because it’s in the hands of Director, Janet Mil... full review
