Gabriela Ortega is a talent to be reckoned with – as a writer and as an actor. “Las Garcia” serves as an arresting showcase for her considerable powers, while also proving an incredibly compelling experience for the audience. The specificity in the writing, acting and direction are a marvel. The two stories told in “Las Garcia” are interwoven seamlessly and poetically. Solo theatre can be a daunting prospect – both for performer and audience member – but Ortega is a sure guide, ferrying us along with her verve, her generosity and her powerhouse presence.
What I didn't like
Here’s to hoping this play gets the exposure it deserves.
My overall impression
A must-see at the 2016 Hollywood Fringe – even if solo theatre is not your thing. Ortega is a luminous talent and, under Alex Alpharaoh’s skilled, muscular direction, “Las Garcia” burns brightly. Do not miss this play. A richly rewarding experience.
