This is an incredible show, both well-written and beautifully performed. Joseph Valdez is onstage, WORKING IT, for an hour nonstop– his focus is absolutely unbreakable and his energy is unbelievable. He takes us into the boyish and humorous world of rambunctious, imaginative child Little Big Joe; he brings us out through a story about living with substance abuse and addiction, told from a child's perspective. A one hour, single voice presentation that blew me away! Writer/performer Joseph Valdez keeps you in the palm of his hand and captures you in his line of vision as scene after scene of a young boy's true but fantacized relationship to his mom, dad, a couple of bullies, his wagon and a young female appear quickly before you, spin quickly into the next scene and move into an intentional and integrated story. This show broke my heart open. Joseph Valdez's writing is extraordinary and his performance is incredible. The energy soars from the very first line to the beautiful ending. Told from the perspective of a brave little boy's imagination, little Joe takes you into his world like an electric bolt of lightening. It was so much fun to see him battle the bullies of his apartment complex accompanied by his beloved cookie monster wagon. I was reminded of being a child and how much bigger the world seems to you when you are so small. How the pain is magnified when someone hurts your feelings or lets you down...or even worse..when you disappoint your parents.
