'Stories From the Indian Boarding School' is a powerful and multifaceted performance piece that never lags and frequently dazzles. Remarkable contribution by Tom Allard, deftly weaving diverse sensibilities into this complex, frequently unknown, and ultimately tragic chapter of our history. Plus there is authentic music, cross over dancing, exquisite poetry, and plenty of humorous quick witted banter along with 'gottcha in the gut' zingers. I really enjoyed this show. What it lacks in structure it makes up for in heart. A mostly young cast was full of energy and the need to be heard. It is an important story of America that needs to be heard. We are luckily told at the top that this is a workshop intended to bee seen at schools. So we in essence give it a huge break from our typically snobbish theatre selves (maybe just me) and allow ourselves to enjoy what we are shown. The students enter performing a traditional dance until one breaks out into modern club dancing and a fight ensues. It is unclear why or where the students are gathered at the beginning. I really appreciated the beginning of these amazing vignettes stating with traditional drum/song. It took me back to Flagstaff Powwow’s in the 60's. I knew most of the stories of the hideous treatment of our native people, but it still brought tears to my eyes. I didn't mind the sparse props or scene changes since I was very wrapped up in the performance. With such a boulder-crushingly heavy subject, it was great that a little bit of humor was added in. I would like to see it transformed into a 2.5-hr. production. I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in ANYTHING having to do with Native American Indians. BRAVO!... full review

The stories presented were both educational and riveting. It really made learning some awful truths an entertaining and at times comedic experience ("every drama needs its comedic relief")! What a lovely start to what will become a wonderful touring production for Native Voices!... full review
