What I liked
I can tell that Steven is a tremendous, polished performer. Having not seen any of his prior shows, I don’t have background on his story, but it sounds like he’s told his story to great success in the past. I respect how much he has come through, and how much work he has put into his one man shows!
What I didn't like
At the particular performance I saw, it seemed as though he was just workshopping an hour worth of new songs and monologues. He didn’t go into much detail on his life and story, and in fact seemed at a loss for words if he wasn’t singing. I left feeling let down that I didn’t learn much about his life, or the sociology of cults. And those aspects are what fascinate me and are what brought me to the show to begin with. He did give us tidbits, about being excommunicated, and reunited with his brother, those moments I really appreciated.
My overall impression
This seemed like strictly a workshop performance. From the other reviews, sounds like there were performances where he did go into much detail into his life, cults and cult mentality. I’m hoping to catch another performance when the show comes together!
