The play narrates the story of Jean Genet, the controversial twentieth century playwright, poet, essayist, petty criminal, prostitute and outsider, and his decision to eschew middle-class morality to pursue evil. “You think I’m evil? So be it. I am! But now you will have to accept me as evil.”
His petty criminal life prepared him to commit the supreme crime, “Murder is the most novel of all crimes since it removes me once and for all out of your respectable society.” Thus, Genet repeatedly steals and commits petty crimes, and above all tries to kill. Until at one point, against his own will, his life takes a turn and he becomes somebody else. A broken man, disappointed and unsatisfied with himself, he pursues a new life which is very different from what he had planned. The one-man play draws on research of Genet’s life, writings, articles, friends’ and relatives’ testimonies.
“Jean Genet, Son of a Bitch” is a physical and movement-based theatrical performance that, on the one hand, avoids special effects and, on the other, emphasizes acting and theatrical skills.
Zion Ashkenazi (formerly of Gesher Theater) is both actor and director of the play.
