My overall impression
A great concept brought to life using a ton of clever elements. What it needs is just a little more polish and clarity to be a truly great show. This show is full of larger-than-life personalities – video game characters, each the central figure of their respective franchises – and when you’ve got that many powerful personalities on stage at once, scenes need to be very clean and crisp, with clear, precise direction and blocking in order to avoid devolving into chaos. There were a few moments during group scenes with the whole cast on stage where so many things were happening at once, the experience felt overwhelming.
However, once the battles began, the show fell into an entertaining rhythm, and I found myself invested in the story. The fight choreography was absolutely brutal and viciously impressive, and the interactive elements of the production were well-planned and executed. It was pretty cool to feel like we had an element of decisive control over who won and who lost.
A passing familiarity with video games will certainly enhance your enjoyment of this show. Overall, I sincerely enjoyed this epic production and I heartily recommend checking it out.
