Every year there’s one new musical that takes Hollywood Fringe by storm. This year that show is likely to be Erik Przytulski and Steve Troop’s deliciously genre-bending Alien Vs. Musical. Click on "Original Article" to read my complete review at StageSceneLA.com.... full review

The laughter starts the moment the first character steps on stage at "Alien vs. Musical," a clever mash-up of Broadway shows and Hollywood sci-fi now playing at the L.A. Fringe. That character (I won't tell you who) is just the first example of spot-on costume and visual design talent. The show's amazing puppet creatures were designed by Steve Troop, the show's clever use of lighting (hand-held flashlights, mostly) and special effects are thanks to director Matthew Tyler and his team. Mr. Tyler creatively wrangles the large (10-person) cast; the small Elephant Space stage just barely contains the bursting energy of the ensemble. That ensemble is a collection of fresh L.A. musical theatre talent who give us their all. They take on mu... full review

I was able to see this show last year and even though I know nobody in this cast or have any connection to the show, I feel this amazing sense of being so proud of them. From what I saw last year to this year, it brought a tear to my eye. A bigger space, a bigger show, a live band, etc. It's amazing what has been done in the last year and am so excited for this cast. This is a must see! If you saw it last year, you definitely should see it this year, it's magical. More songs, more scenes, more musicals! I laughed until I had tears in my eyes. Job well done! I can only hope it keeps growing!... full review

While I can't say I got bored, the show by nature is redundant, and the tunes aren't so clever that it made my ears prick up. The hardworking cast is having a blast (I especially liked Annie), but there's an amateurish quality that keeps this Fringebound for life. Yes, it's all silly fun, but my god what this show could be with more depth of story and character development. No one will be disappointed by seeing it.... full review

Set in the “Land of Musicals” with characters from hit musicals like the Sound of Music, Rent, Les Misérables, and Annie, Alien vs. Musical is the story of a mysterious egg, the laughter, singing, and chaos that ensues after the egg is hatched and of course the unrelenting desire to be a star on Broadway. As the story opens, we meet a bunch of friends from all of the land of musicals who each seems to have a deeper unexplored story that led them away from the musical life they once knew and found themselves in a group of unlikely friends. Today is Effie’s (Dreamgirls) birthday and Annie (Annie) has found an interesting egg that she thinks would be a perfect gift. Unfortunately, the egg hatches and turns out to be a murderous Alien (Aliens ... full review

The standout is Allie Costa as Annie. See it for the fun of it but without high performance expectations and you’ll have a great time. It’s perfect Fringe material.... full review

Last year’s must #SeeItLA, "Alien Vs. Musical" returns with a 90 minute full-length version. The music and lyrics are masterfully composed by Erik Przytulski, for example the first song performed by Harold (Nick Emmett McGee) of "The Music Man" could have been a trunk song (a song that didn’t make a production’s final cut) written by Meredith Willson – if the subject matter wasn’t about aliens. The creature design by Steve Troop is just as magical as last year. Plus, the book written by Przytulski and Troop shows a deep understanding of musicals and makes a hilarious parody. All of this makes this a #SeeItLA, again, if you like musicals or have a little bit of knowledge about them. Like last year, you do not need to have seen "Alien" to e... full review

The battle between alien and musical theater characters continues at this year’s Hollywood Fringe Festival as the infamous musical Alien Vs. Musical is back with a new and extended version. Creators Erik Przytulski and Steve Troop have developed a piece that’s both the product of the edgy parodies that the Hollywood Fringe Festival is known for and something they each love: aliens and musicals. Everything is calm, even perfect in Musical-land. All your favorite Broadway characters including, Elpheba, Annie, Maria, Danny Zuko and many others live in perfect harmony, literally. It’s all fun and games until someone gets hurt. Elder Price from Book Of Mormon gets the life sucked out of him by a Xenomorph, from Alien. Wait, what did you just say? You heard right. This is Aliens Vs. Musical. After taking home the audience voted Best Musical Award at last year’s Hollywood Fringe, AvM returns with an extended version promising more gags, songs and fun. For me, it just went on a little too long. Annie, played by Allie Costa, is beyond superb. A knockout performance. She fully encapsulates the character with more truth and cut than any ot... full review
