My overall impression
This show really blew me away. I wasn’t sure what to expect going in — the Underground Theater is extremely small, and I’ve seen shows there before that were full-sized pieces crammed into a tiny space (which never quite works). This is also an unfortunate, if inevitable, challenge of the Fringe in general — a lot of non-blackbox shows shoved into blackboxes.
But this show was something else. It was exactly the right size, proportioned just right — for the space, and for the Fringe. Massive applause for Emily & Elizabeth Hinkler — this is a hard-driven piece that requires ENORMOUS physical commitment and almost frenetic energy from both actresses, and this show never lagged once. I was frankly amazed at their ability to fit such large performances into such an unavoidably intimate space — it takes a lot of skill not to distract, or be distracted by, proximity to the audience in a space like that, but they made it work PERFECTLY. It was touching, and heartbreaking, and smart, and hilariously funny. Polished, professional, amazingly well done. Phenomenal work by all involved.
