Who hasn’t ever felt that the Devil deserved his due? In THEDEVILYOUSAY, Satan gets to take center stage, and he couldn’t have had a better argument to sway me to his side.
The writing, first and foremost, is articulate, deft and appropriately weighty. But then, when someone has had a millennia worth of people spouting off spurious facts and opinions about them, you’d have a lot to say as well.
Satan seemed a little stiff and rigid on the stage. I don’t mean his acting or stage presence, no no. Satan was born to take the stage. I just mean that in the best possible way, he seemed to be made of wood. It was as if he was channelling the masterful ability of some unseen force, like his movements were inspired and fluidly controlled by something greater than even he. Perhaps God. Perhaps that strange shadow that lingered behind him through-out his stage time – what was that thing all about?
Some complain that THEDEVILYOUSAY lacks a sufficient character arc. I say that the purpose of a soliloquy is for a player to express themselves as they see themselves, to make their case and to illustrate their own particular train of thought. Satan, ever the true gentleman, nonetheless illustrates his views loudly and clearly. And who would ever want him to change? The Devil remains, forever, himself.
