Mary of the Avenue

musicals and operas · theatre americana · United States

Mary of the Avenue is a light-hearted, yet poignant play set during winter in the heart of New York City. It is about a young woman, Carrie, who sets out from her mid-western town to find her mother who, years before, left without notice. With some help from the press, she connects with Mary who lives on the street. Determined to bring her mom back home with her, Carrie begins to explore life on the streets, as Mary introduces her to some pretty colorful characters.
Original music and lyrics are written to reflect the essence of the story, with the lament of the homeless in Cold Wind, and their satirical outlook on life in Life’s a Pisser, Designer Clothes, and Sacks of Fifth Avenue. Carrie gives the audience a tender moment with My Missing Person, while Mary delivers an optimistic outlook on life in Five Minutes of Sunshine. Don’t be surprised if you see yourself in one of the characters.
Mary of the Avenue is timeless, and filled with a range of emotions, not the least of which is the realization that lunch from a dumpster may be the best thing that ever happened to you!
