My overall impression
Kyla Garcia is a masterful storyteller, and the beauty of her craft is met by genuine bravery. Hers is a coming-of-age heart-breaking true love story that both opens and heals one’s heart. Kyla teaches us that hearts can break open, and that by voicing one’s story, one can learn how to fly. Her story is my story, and if you too have loved and lost, lost and found, this play will help you complete your own journey towards self-love. When I was 13 one of my best friend’s mothers told me, “You can’t really love anyone else until you love yourself.” For years I proceeded to fall in love after love that broke my own heart, because I hadn’t yet learned how to unfurl my own two wings. The Mermaid Who Learned How To Fly is a modern myth that teaches us that sometimes we must sink before we learn how to swim, and that sometimes we must swim before we can fly. Sometimes we must get wet before we can choose to shake our wings dry. Kyla Garcia confirms and affirms that magic exists in the mundane, that our own stories have purpose, and that if we choose to honor our own truth, we all have wings with which to fly.
