Four Tree Plays

Sometimes it's difficult to experience well-developed plays in Los Angeles. This play really had me thinking about the trees, if they truly have feelings, and how important they are to mankind. Each actor committed 100% to the four tree plays. I also enjoyed the modern dance-type arrangement, I believe, in the third play, so look out for that because it brought a real, tender, emotional, humanistic approach, to how an older tree may feel. Oh WOW! I just loved this show so much and am now such a fan of all involved. This ensemble of actors- Dawn Alden, Whit Spurgeon, Leilani Marie Smith and Brendan Weinhold - play so beautifully together, really nuanced, heart-felt, fun and imaginative performances all around. At times I laughed out loud and at others I had goosebumps. All four short plays are super strong writing-wise as well, and I marveled at Tim J. Lim's simple beautiful staging and expertly tuned direction. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this show. I know some of the actors and crew, which is what caught my attention to attend the performance last night. I liked the four short one acts that all dealt with trees as a main character, which got me thinking about emotions, personalities, and the types of situations that humans deal with everyday, and how the tree characters had the same moments too. Entertaining. There's lots of performances, which is great, because certainly one of them can fit into your busy Fringe schedule.... full review

As I child I loved trees and could always be found up in a tree. As an only child I often anthropomorphized most things, including the tress which all had names. So I was delighted to see Four Tree Plays which are four short plays all on the topic of trees. “Seeking Still” depicts online dating for trees – smart and engaging writing by Nicolas Hoover cleverly encapsulates qualities of trees. “Tree Counsel” by Stina Pederson is about an old tree that could possibly have been an old site of worship. It’s the weakest of the four in terms of writing, but does have some lovely moments. “Sophistree” begins hilariously with an activist up in a tree that begins talking to him. Very engaging experience of pure and thoughtful theatre. Charmingly childish while being so strange and deep and dreamlike….
