Last year, married comedy duo Couplet stole the hearts of audiences all over the globe, from New York to Edinburgh – in their multi-award-winning and critically acclaimed show Honey Honey Moon Moon. At Hollywood Fringe, it nabbed two wins and two nominations, including the Fringe Award for Comedy & Variety. This year they return with a folktale about sex and death in a hot new hour of musical comedy, directed by Katie Lindsay.
In FOLKMARRYKILL, Marnina & Micah are asking the hard questions: “how often should a married couple, you know, folk?” and “how long can forever actually last?” and “if you had to, who would you kill: Kermit the Frog, Paddington Bear, or Tony Hawk?” With their guitar and fiddle, Couplet tells so-weird-they-must-be-true stories from a decade of being monogamous… a British sleep hypnotist, a therapy workbook that doesn’t hold back, and an Uber driver who loved his zip ties. They’ll keep folking till death do them part.
Hailing from Los Angeles, Marnina Schon (she/they) and Micah O’Konis (they/them) are both classically trained in violin & guitar and sing in perfect harmony, even when they’re fighting. Having been described as “this generation’s Flight of the Conchords” and also “like my annoying aunt’s annoying friends”, last year they went on to tour Honey Honey Moon Moon (directed by Chris Grace & Eric Michaud) and were invited to perform at various prestigious venues worldwide.
The duo is best known for their queer anthem “People Think We’re Straight” and the cautionary tale about their couples therapist “Jacquelyn Denfark.” Even P!NK jumped on the bandwagon by reposting their viral holiday song “Hot Hanukkah.” Couplet has been seen in the New York Times, the Guardian, and heard on BBC Radio 4. The New York Post called them “that comedy duo”. They perform regularly at UCB, Dynasty Typewriter, The Elysian, and other theatres around LA and across the US, and have created sketches with the likes of Josh Gad, Michaela Watkins and Seth Rogen.
As an actor, Marnina starred in Sundance selection comedy-drama Chanshi with Henry Winkler and Netflix’s Unstable with Rob Lowe and Fred Armisen. She also features in national commercials, including one as ‘Creepy Violinist’, a part she trained for her whole life. You can also catch Marnina in Heated Rivalry: The Musical Parody as the scene-stealing intimacy coordinator… also featuring songs she co-wrote with Micah!
As a writer, Micah creates new shows every month with Quick & Funny Musicals at the Upright Citizen’s Brigade theatre. Their music has been featured in films, TV, and commercials. Recently, they co-created the musical Good Guy with a Gun! along with songwriter Philip Labes. A cast album premiering this new American satire will be released July 4th featuring the likes of Chris Sullivan, Kimiko Glenn, Anthony Rapp, Richard Kind and Kristen Schaal… plus, Marnina!
FOLKMARRYKILL is a hilarious new hour of songs, stories, and jokes from the other side of marital bliss not to be missed this June before they tour Boston and Edinburgh!
