I appreciate the concept of using contemporary language with classic, historical figures. This particular mesh had several moments that were comical genius.
Special shout-out must go to Allen Warnock’s and his flashy character work! He energizes the scenes whenever he is on stage.
What I didn't like
For me, take away a few missed lines and character breaks, the main note I would have is about focus. I feel this piece has such potential, but lacks genuine focus and direction to make it shine.
For example, having the three servants (i.e. Greek Chorus) on-stage not really saying or doing anything serves no purpose. Additionally, the lead performer should have more moments off-stage where others can fully talk about her to add dimension.
My overall impression
What happens when you take Marie Antoinette of the French Revolution, add in some clown work, lots of rhyme schemes, a few quirky songs, and a supporting cast of players? You get Julie Perkin’s Gilded Rage, naturally.
The show makes its own rules, breaks the fourth wall, interacts with the audience (and a knight in shining armor), all while trying not to break character. Sometimes, this proved to be particularly challenging. However, all the performers look like they are having a blast on stage!
