About the Project
WOKE IN A WORLD is an ever-changing showcase of storytelling and select poems from Wise’s latest collection, MY OLDER BROTHER, A FAMOUS RAPPER – featuring live music and original poems by Alyesha Wise.
Wise first previewed WOKE IN A WORLD on night two of her fall 2025 book release. She, then, fully debuted it as a full event in Feb 2026 in the Wanda Coleman Theatre at Beyond Baroque. Each rendition of the show is created to be somewhat different in poem selection and the direction of the story, which largely highlights family dynamics (centering Wise’s brother’s story) and the dismantling of the global patricarchy. The performance and stage components switch between acoustic and music, with conversational and huge performance recitations, keeping each piece fresh and allowing moments of levity to shine.
