Loved the storytelling, the traditional tale, the ritual quality. Shahin’s inhabiting of a variety of characters is superb, particularly, his touching creation of his beloved.
What I didn't like
Although the piece is meant to be about youth triumphing over the darkness of patriarchal traditions, the only real struggle takes place at the end about the son’s choice of a mate whom the father/elders see as the devil. There is more in the piece about the father’s rage at the son.
My overall impression
A powerful piece and a powerful performance. I was riveted throughout. Highly recommend.
