Great use of a relatively small (but lovely and welcoming) performance space. The video projection of a fog-shrouded coastal lighthouse contributed atmosphere without being a distraction, and the periodic distant foghorn blasts gave the evening an appropriately sombre cadence. Looking back, I’m thinking it may have also served as a pitch reference, since I never heard a pitch-pipe in this almost entirely a cappella performance. If true, a very creative solution.
What I didn't like
Having a close-up videographer in the midst of the action was often a distraction. My willful suspension of disbelief finally found its limit with a stabilized camera rig in the middle of a 19th century story. Unfortunate planning choice, but kudos to the actors who must feel right at home on a film set.
My overall impression
I could listen to these six sing all night. Intricate vocal arrangements, performed with precision and nuance. The story which threads the songs together is a bit opaque, but also not critical to enjoying the evening. Reading the song-by-song story synopsis afterward explained many things that went right past me during the performance. But altogether a memorable evening.
