"Only Child Syndrome" was an exciting theatrical experience eagerly attended by a rapt audience that writer/director/star Jay kept engaged and even cheering for the entire hour. This show tackles the universal question of what one should make of one's birth order (or more specifically, one's only-child status) on a hilarious, endearing personal scale. The show's interactive audience involvement was delightfully fun and engaging....

Easily one of my favorite Fringe friends, and not just because of being a fellow only child here! Jay is a revelation, and I'm already ready for a remount!...

Only Child Syndrome is a raw, heartfelt, and deeply authentic one-person show that transforms personal memories into a warm, hilarious, and moving theatrical experience. Jay Whitmore is a natural storyteller, effortlessly drawing the audience into his world through humor, vulnerability, and genuine connection. The personal details, from family photos and chess trophies to stories about his self-proclaimed “arch nemesis” made the evening feel intimate and uniquely his own. What stayed with me most was the show’s reminder that being an only child can be both a gift and a blessing; while Jay may have grown up without siblings, his story beautifully reveals the community, friendships, and chosen family that surrounded him....

A funny and insightful piece. It shows how we can try to relate to people from very different circumstances and how those most similar to us can be the ones that aggravate us the most. ...

Jay is clearly a man of many, many talents. This highly relatable show explores the ups and downs of being a child, only or otherwise, how we relate to others, seek connection, and build with the blocks we’re given. Mike Birbiglia-esque. This is an impressive and poised solo show debut, and I have a hunch Jay is a rising star worth checking out year after year. ...

Jay's one child show is a sweet, clever, entertaining examination of what it means to be an accomplished only child. He excels at many things but just to win, not for the sake of the activity itself. He's competitive, hardworking, very creative, and just a little bit lonely. I'm certain his only child loneliness will be alleviated by all the friends he makes through this show....

As a only child myself, it's so wonderful to feel seen in this way! Jay is hilarious and very endearing. His dad was sitting next to me and that made the show all the more memorable :) Great gags throughout and a teary ending — a fun ride!...

Jay is such a likable and personable person that the show is a vivid reflection of that! It is immensely wholesome and personal and you walk away feeling like you really know him, which if the show is any indication is a great person to know. ...
