Juggling, impressions, chess mastery and more talents aside, the show shone brightest when Jay dropped in, sharing true vulnerability and reflection on stage. Great use of space throughout, fun dynamics and varying modalities, also meaningful props and even costume choices. There’s a lot of really good meat on this bone, and I thought things tied together really nicely.
What I didn't like
There’s some room for the show to grow, beats to land, jokes to finesse. If the goal is Mike Birbiglia (which I think is a fair comparison to make here), then it’s not far off.
My overall impression
Jay is clearly a man of many, many talents. This highly relatable show explores the ups and downs of being a child, only or otherwise, how we relate to others, seek connection, and build with the blocks we’re given. Mike Birbiglia-esque. This is an impressive and poised solo show debut, and I have a hunch Jay is a rising star worth checking out year after year.
