You gotta love a cast that goes all out. Tiffany Asta is perfectly charming as Joshua, Natascha Aldridge’s Creedence is a delightfully sexy weirdo, and Megan Crockett melted my face off with her crazy-impressive Preacher vocals. Additionally, I love whatever is wrong with Raphael Berglas, Lucas Alifano’s guileless wit always sparkles, and Eric Geller’s spirited, rubber-faced antics as Grandpa Seth stole every scene he was in. And Joe Hernandez-Kolski? His whole performance is rock solid, but prepare to be extra impressed when he busts out the dance moves. I could go on, but I gotta wrap this up… Everyone was stellar.
What I didn't like
Whew, the Cat’s Crawl is a great venue, but the owners have got to put in some acoustic panels or something above the stage. Sure, the wood-beamed ceiling is beautiful, but it doesn’t mean much if the sound all gets sucked up into the abyss. Even strong singers who I’ve seen elsewhere were struggling to be heard, despite not being too far from the audience. If the Cat’s Crawl wants to be a destination for this kind of fare, they need a space that better supports the artists needs. (And that’s to say nothing of the single bathroom for the entire venue…)
My overall impression
Let a band of talented and highly committed goofballs make a musical out of the “best worst movie”, and what do you expect? This. I expect this: a tongue-in-cheek sendup that never lets being in on the joke interfere with delivering seriously impressive performances alongside midnight-movie camp.
