In parodying old Hollywood stars, Shayna actually brings with her the real voice, looks, and nuanced acting that Hollywood stars are made of. You can’t help but feel that Micki is too dear to her and deeply well informed to be a mean spirited mockery, and this opens the door for her to get messy with it. I found as an audience member that an inexplicable tenderness towards the character develops naturally right up to every point when Micki tries to dash your faith again with one moral failing or another. There are many of these contrasts that keep the show spinning around. One I will not fail to mention is Dimitri’s role as Micki’s perfect foil. His steady impatience and conjured sympathy tell us that this is all more routine than you might think.
From evolving facial expressions to repeated gags, there’s simply a lot to dig into. There is a depth of development of character and world that I hadn’t expected, and all of the fun Hollywood parody songs, in turn, serve that story.
What I didn't like
I didn’t find there were really any low points
My overall impression
I was blown away by how clever the show was and how deeply I fell into being in the room with Micki. As she sings and swoons, she dips herself dangerously far into sad realities before popping back up and taking command of the stage once again, creating the kind of dizzying and absurd spectacle we’ve come to expect from our best stars
