Kelly covers a lot of ground (and years) in this show. Her family history is intriguing and sometimes frightening. I liked that quite a few things happened that were unexpected, or didn’t turn out the way I thought they would. This led to some edge-of-your-seat moments and one plot twist in particular that I did not see coming in the least! (No spoilers!). But at the same time, Kelly treated her family’s dynamics with a welcomed sense of humor that led to several laugh out loud moments, which were a great tension reliever for the audience. I was engaged from beginning to end.
What I didn't like
I say this about almost every Fringe show I see. The pacing could have been slowed down, if not for the Fringe time limitation that every play has to deal with. I would have liked to savor certain moments a bit more, but fitting a fifty-six-minute show into a one-hour time slot does not leave much breathing room. If Kelly performs this show outside of Fringe, I would suggest slowing the pace, which will draw the audience in even more. For future Fringe shows, it’s probably better to do a forty-five-minute piece and take your time.
My overall impression
A detailed journey through a life filled with challenges, both emotional and physical, that explores how Kelly dealt with, survived and ultimately triumphed over extremely difficult family issues. Both shocking and humorous at times, the play is an entertaining and wild ride. A true story.
