The play really came alive during the dual health crises, and the equilibrium the characters reach after their journey feels earned. I liked the callback to the Dad’s letter and the money; and there were a lot of good gags very specific to both a writer’s life and life in L.A.
What I didn't like
A few of the quips and burns got repeated multiple times to diminishing returns, and I couldn’t get on board with the Zoom call gag since I kept wondering why she didn’t just say there was an argument happening in the hallway. The writing is clever but without selling me that it’s a make-or-break necessity that she cover for it in this way, it lost oxygen.
My overall impression
Wordplay and physical comedy keep Eric Toms’s play zipping along while the underlying themes of regret, the crash of ambition into adulthood, and the legacy of imperfect parents anchor it. Good entertainment with strong potential to continue developing.
