Performance was strong and the ways Spencer differentiated his characters and scenes with simple blocking and lighting kept the show focused and simple. A good mix of humor and seriousness.
What I didn't like
Wished we got to see more range of emotion portrayed—I feel as queer men, we’re often afraid or unwilling to express the rage that can come up. I wanted to see Spencer get angry on stage… the whole play felt a little flat in terms of emotional range—we never really see him engaging with the emotions around his story beyond humor and his newfound understanding through his therapist. Surely there’s anger in the story we’re not hearing about.
My overall impression
Spencer definitely succeeds in the challeging aspects of being a one-man-show. He controls the stage and keeps the audience with him as he tells the story of his self love and understanding. I enjoyed his story, and was inspired that he has the courage to tell it.
