I thought Laurel Kathleen was incredible in The Visitor last year, and find myself unsurprised yet delighted that she’s even better when she’s speaking live as well as scuttling around. Solo shows can be hit or miss, and this one HITS. I left wanting to hear more and have more time in that space with that person, which is what you want from a solo show. Kathleen touches on some difficult truths about being an artist in LA and being a human being in general. From flaky-yet-demanding “friends” to making art (that takes a lot out of you, even when you love it) in the face of daunting major life events to the ways we cope (without spoiling: Kathleen found a way to make the Crunchwrap even more supreme), Re-Visitor, as its stunning poster demonstrates, invites us in to experience a slice of the artist’s life, while daring us to investigate our own lives and choices. Do we show up for our friends the way we hope they show up for us? Are the choices I’m making (or have made) healthy for me? How do we focus on the good in life when the bad has a way of pushing in uninvited? Is there a way to offset the munchies while getting high?
…and I haven’t even gotten to the humor yet! Laurel Kathleen is an accomplished comedian and those chops are on full display throughout the hour of Re-Visitor. She has such an ease and warmth when speaking to the audience that you feel like you’re in her living room having a chat. She deftly guides the audience from gut-busting laughs into poignant reflection and back, making for a truly unforgettable show.
What I didn't like
A few minor tech issues, covered for expertly by Kathleen. I went to the preview—-I’m sure whatever happened in my show will be fixed by the time you see it.
