I liked how surprising this show was; I didn’t know what to expect next. The story was so satisfying. The variety of puppetry was most welcome. I think I had certain expectations of what counts as a puppet, but they definitely expanded my perception. I also liked how quickly the artists subverted the circus form and immersed the audience in the world of the play. The pacing and use of space were fantastic – there was an economy and resourcefulness that was inspiring. With imagination, innovation, and commitment, anything is possible.
What I didn't like
Perhaps some of the technical elements could be tightened – more light on some of the balcony scenes and crisper microphone audio. But these are elements that will sharpen naturally with more reps. I felt like I was watching pure, unadulterated theater-making in real time. To watch the artists roll with any miscues or missteps simply added to the appeal.
My overall impression
THIS is what Fringe is all about!!! I went in without any expectations and walked out wanting more, more, more! I had a smile on my face from start to finish. This show unfolds like a wild fever dream, diving deeper and deeper into the mind of a mad clown. The puppetry work is on point and shows up in so many different forms. Original, daring, demented, and so much damn fun. I hope to see it again and again. May this show have a long life, and may these artists continue to take risks and trust in their vision.
