About the Project

Art has always been the thing to save me. That sounds hyperbolic, but looking back at my life, in every moment I have struggled, the path out of the darkness was riddled with wonky DIYs. August Wygal went to a Psych Ward is a show I wrote to save myself. On December 13th, 2025, when I was involuntarily checked into BHC Alhambra Hospital- of what type of hospital this was, you’ll have to guess. Together, we will examine my journey with mental health to figure out how I ended up there.  I will put aside societal impetus and speak with utter and possibly uncomfortable honesty. The hope is that in my story there might be relatable aspects, even so far as to be humorously so. Through real-time, audience-provided peer review, you can expect answers to such gnawing questions as: Nature or nurture, what forms mental illness? When did it all go wrong? Who am I? What do I like? And do I rely too strongly on outside opinions for validation?

I find myself coming back to humor over and over in times of need. Right now, I need it more than ever. And I think audiences need it too. Not as a way to sweep things under the rug. But a way to be honest that does not feel as heavy. And all of this aside, after this show, at least I won’t have to have individual conversations with everyone I know about where I went for one week last December
