I appreciate the grit and unapologetic conflict between the two lead characters. While it seemed easy to choose one to root for over the other, a few surprises popped up to turn the protagonist/antagonist battle upside down.
Also, it’s impossible not to find the ending of the piece very cathartic – any time someone is daring enough to lose something they value on stage (no, no, I won’t give it away), it makes for riveting theatre.
What I didn't like
As this show grows and moves beyond Fringe, I offer the following thoughts to ponder:
1) Given the myriad of locations and quick transitions, this piece would probably be more appropriate as a short film over a play.
2) I would recommend more costume changes to help denote passage of time (unless everything is meant to appear to happen in a span of 48-72 hours).
3) Could projections help with locations vs. moving large furniture pieces off and on?
My overall impression
Nothing about the professional world of modeling is as cut & dry as outsiders perceive. The bonds of friendship and trust are tested when two models, Edina (plus sized) and Khalil (straight-sized) find themselves at multiple crossroads.
It’s tough trying to make a living in NYC, especially in your twenties. It becomes infinitely more complicated when boyfriends, parents, and agents are thrown into the mix. This serio-comedy is a slice-of-life play that features a diverse cast of eight performers! That’s quite something for the Fringe!
