STRANDED by Fiona Lakeland

The world premiere of STRANDED emerged out of a collaboration between the three of us (Fiona Lakeland, Kimberly Connolly and Adrian LaTourelle), with the idea of taking inspiration from journals and writings of Sylvia Plath and Marilyn Monroe and allowing their imagery to underscore what would inevitably become STRANDED.

What we’ve learned through the writing and working of this piece is that love and hate can exist on the same plane. Coming on its own into a world that explores how Sexual Abuse affects Mental Health, STRANDED takes a deep look inside what we must sacrifice, and the prices we pay in an effort to protect ourselves from the reality of or experiences and our existence. STRANDED is what culminated from this collaboration.

Jeff Gardner says: “I saw this last night. Incredible performances from these two women. Very haunting and beautiful. Go see this!…”

Josh Hillinger says: “Intense and talented performances. Definitely worth it for the end. I left invigorated. Heavy subject matters, but overall very realistic presentations of traumatized young women trying to connect…”

With STRANDED our goal is speak for victims and survivors of Sexual Abuse, and to start the conversation on How Sexual Abuse affects Mental Health.

Thank You!
Fiona, Kimberly and Adrian

THE STORY

“The story is about Annabelle and Lucy who are two personalities, of perhaps many personalities, that are inhabiting one body, and in the beginning they’re both really not able to connect at all; and then throughout the piece, based on how each of them sort of deal with the abuse, that’s what inevitably allows them to come together in the end.”

STRANDED takes a deep look inside two great minds to untangle love, loss, and our inevitable desire for connection!

THOUGHTS ON SYLVIA PLATH AND MARILYN MONROE (within this process)

“Marilyn, when you look at her writing, she was really very unhappy and very disturbed.”

“With Sylvia Plath, I’ve always been drawn to: What does it mean to be mentally unstable?”

There is something very haunting about both Sylvia and Marilyn, who, each in their own way, hid behind a public mask, and only through their writings were they able to release some of their darkest demons.

Some questions we asked in creating the script were:

- Did these demons inevitably lead to their suicides?
- Does death of choice lead to a different place than death of natural cause?
- If that is the case, then what is this “middle distance” when, perhaps, your heart and soul separate from your body? And then how do they get back to it.
