Ma’at and his cast embark on a very ambitious tale spanning many years of the eponymous Lovve’s life, across various creative personae he adopts throughout his life, or perhaps, which adopt him. Extremely committed character-driven performances with a highly dramatic tone and register that frequently verges on poetic, while remaining very connected to the play’s themes and stakes.
What I didn't like
Certain finer technical aspects of this production such as scene transitions, wardrobe, and staging may still be finding their way, and I wished at times the actors felt at liberty to use more of the stage, or perhaps that the life present in the dialogue bled outward onto the set surrounding them. I understand this play has traveled to many venues state to state so I empathize with the fact that each theater might have its own learning curve.
My overall impression
An emotional saga chronicling the rise and fall of a brilliant painter. Recommended for anyone who enjoys artist biographies. This is a work of fiction but is imbued with many of the same qualities those artists’ stories that continue to transfix us like those of Basquiat, Rothko, Pollack, Hendrix, and even Shakespeare himself.
