What I liked
How blaringly unapologetic it is about the celebration and usage of their culture and language. I love the decision of utilizing both Spanish and English because despite my lack of fluency in Spanish, I understand and was onboard with the context due to the performers being great storytellers. I was brought into the world of the musical from what’s being conveyed. The music also brings out what the characters are going through and allow the actors to pour out as they sing, act, and dance.
What I didn't like
I do wish there can be more technical layers implemented in the musical numbers. For example, the numbers would benefit from live harmonies, chorus, and another group number. I also think the writer can allow certain plot driven scenes to permeate through dialogue and not through a musical number vise versa. There are certain musical beats that would felt a lot more earn.
My overall impression
Cuarto Dorado is a spectacular musical that celebrates Latin culture, family, and love. The musical numbers were upbeat and catchy, the dynamic within the ensemble characters in this bar is lively, yet it doesn’t shy away on touching challenging interpersonal dilemma, and there was alot of heart put into the show. I feel like all those involved resonated with the piece and were place in the position to thrive creatively.
