I loved the interactions of the family and Ceci was hilarious. La Doña was a powerful, yet kind person. She reminded me so much of my grandmother and great grandmother. The music felt familiar and fun. Everyone was tapping their feet, clapping their hands, and snapping along. The slower pieces were so touching, I cried many times.
What I didn't like
This show needs a live, real band playing this music. It would add so much texture and play to an already solid piece.
My overall impression
This is “la storia typica.” It could be your family and friend, or the neighbors down the street. The Reyes family has fallen on hard times, but it is their love for each other that pulls them through it. From the moment La Bruja walks on stage, she draws you in with a wave of her hand. This is a musical like none other. You won’t find the ballad or up tempos of the past. This is the music that is played in the backyard and garages of many homes in the barrio. You’ll laugh, cry, jeer, and cheer. This is Cuarto Dorado, the bar of the barrio!
