When the next generation of The Lonely Island meets the quirky redemption ark of discovering the heart to dancing like nobody's watching (but they definitely are), you get the splendidly hilarious work that is Magic Mic. Creative geniuses Sam Pozen and Frankie Alvarez Lora invite the audience into their world of their caring bromance effortlessly, and each scene felt like it could've been filmed and set as individual episodes of a mini series (which, in my opinion, they totally should do!) I felt so many things in so many regions. With most comedic productions, comics tend to obfuscate their true selves or reject sentimentality for a laugh. It can work, but it can also leave you cold. Sam Pozen and Frankie Alvarez Lora succeed because they allow their earnest love for each other and their work to radiate so brightly you can't help but fall in love with their unflinching honesty. They ring jokes out of true fears and lampoon their ambitions but at the same time they manage to confess those things. They satirize their efforts but you never get the sense that you as an audience member shouldn't care. Sam and Frank have crafted a show that is as hilarious as it is relatable. As a theater artist, I've questioned the choices I've made and wondered if I should throw in the towel and move home. I loved how these artists balanced that dilemma with comedy and the hope of something more. I know I'll see these guys on SNL one day, and I can't wait to tell people I saw them perform in a black box in LA before they made it big. ... full review
