It’s simple, but the candles created really fun moments for the audience to feel like we were contributing to the performance. The framing device and its characters around the two central stories create such a surprising tone that we’re kept guessing throughout in the best ways. I especially enjoyed the interplay between the two performers throughout the first half and the surprising physicality.
What I didn't like
The first half of the show is so surprising that the second half has a higher hurdle to clear. That said, some of my favorite elements—the variety of interactions between the performers and types of crowd work—fade a little bit during the second legend. Where Yuri’s story feels like both performers are constantly passing the ball back and forth, Herc’s relies more on just the featured performer without as much for their partner to do (even though they absolutely shine in the moments they’re given).
My overall impression
Absolute Legends lives up to its name and then some. The funniest show I’ve seen in a long time. This duo of clown performers demonstrates perfect relationships with each other and the audience, and turns even the smallest opportunity into the biggest laugh of the festival. Incredibly impressive to achieve such polish on individual bits and scripted moments while maintaining a loose “lightning in a bottle” feeling across the show.
