About the Project

My Testimony: Fury & Grace is a deeply humanistic piece in the tradition of Spaulding Gray’s dramatic monologues. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and you’ll learn how tic tacs can save you from the Bible.

“The Preacher” just wants to give his testimony, but the wheels falling off his life get in the way. His folks wanted to give him God, but he preferred Star Trek and methamphetamine over tongue talking and fake miracles. The little tomato in his pocket is his only true God anyway.

The violent deaths of two people close to him come crashing out of the little jar of anointin’ oil where he’s kept his demons locked away for thirty years, and he finally comes face to face with the tomato that started it all.

Accolades:

"Ben Johnson’s brilliant one-man show, ‘My Testimony: Fury & Grace’ seizes the audience, taking them on a whirlwind tour through the traumatizing impact of a childhood raised within the world of Born Again Christianity. His Testament is to the traumatizing imprint of history on American families, and the unpreparedness, desperation, and impossibility that drives all families to succeed at any cost, while repeating the past. His journey resounds in the tragedies of Greek Myth and the Eternal Return, which show precisely how recovery from trauma entails going through it again and again, until we become so sickened that we are turned around, only to find that within the sickness is also contained the medicine. The vignettes of personal history are compelling, brought to life in bold images through poetic language. This is an evening of pure, unadulterated theatre not to be missed." — Karen Morris, poet, author “Nothing Happened Last Night”
