McAfee’s performance was incredibly confident, layered and thoughtful. She didn’t miss a beat through this marathon of a show and carried the audience through a complex journey with defiance, humor and vulnerability. Also the best tech’d show I’ve seen at Fringe this season so far, very impressive how those elements elevated the story.
What I didn't like
Loved additional elements of story outside of lighting that brought the world around McAfee’s character to life – the violin, sound design for reporters and the video on the phone playing, etc. Would love to see more of that when this show hopefully gets a longer run!
My overall impression
Hailey McAfee gives an unforgettable performance in this well crafted, powerful examination of a complicated, “selfish” woman tasked to defend the indefensible. Even though I was unfamiliar with both the source material and more modern influences, this poignant, captivating show has me on the edge of my seat the entire performance (along with everyone around me, the woman next to me was sobbing by the end) Excellently directed, highly recommend this deeply moving show!
