What I liked

To begin, I must credit Director, Dave Solomon for his visionary leadership. He assembles a first-rate team to bring out all the promise this show has to offer. And of all of his decisions, he cast this show with an ensemble that is of the highest caliber.

Starting with lead performer, Anthony Norman (Mark) makes the role his own. Complete with teenage angst, anxiety, yet with a strong need to express himself, Norman’s portrayal is superb! Joining him is Jasiana Caraballo (Nora) who is a breath of fresh air! Her rendition of the song, “You are the Voice,” was the highlight of the show for me.

Additional cast members, Darcy Rose Byrnes (Paige), Aaron Gibbs (Mazz), Amanda Angeles (Stacey), Madison Miyuki Sprague (Tracie), and Will Riddle (Malcolm) have moments to shine throughout the piece. And when it comes to antagonists, Michele Ragusa (Cresswood) is despicably marvelous!

Of course, there is no musical without Jeremy Desmon’s book and lyrics and Jeff Thomson’s music. While the show is 2.5 hours long, it didn’t feel that way and I attribute that to audience investing in the music and story. Both are superb. The Hollywood Fringe is merely a stop on the road for this show (which I inevitably see making its way to Broadway).

What I didn't like

To the best of my knowledge, the show does not provide a trigger warning for suicide. For those who are sensitive to that topic, be forewarned.

My overall impression

In a show that questions what it means to be young, allow me to say that Pump Up the Volume: The Musical is as relevant today as in the 1990’s (when the show takes place). While billed as a “Staged Concert,” do not let that classification diminish the amazingly high production values present. This show, taking place in the Hudson’s Backstage theatre, is the same caliber of any Hollywood Bowl concert I have seen.

Every single element of this show is spectacular! Whether describing the talent on stage, the musicians, or the crew tasked with creating the show, I could not find any weaknesses or flaws. From conception to execution, Pump Up the Volume: The Musical delivers with a rocking, emotionally moving score, irresistible lyrics, and a moving book that authentically follows its movie inspiration.

This show is bound for a Best Musical award at the Fringe. You heard it hear first!
