What I liked

Indeed, there are many things to like in this production, but to begin, it must start and end with Boye’s performance and skills. I thoroughly enjoyed all the singing and dancing numbers, most especially “It’s Too Darn Hot,” from Kiss Me Kate.

Additionally, I enjoyed learning snippets about Miller’s life that I previously did not know, such as her psychic abilities, details surrounding her miscarriage, and how she introduced Lucille Ball to Desi Arnaz. And Boye delivers her information with a relaxation and ease in communicating with the audience.

Credit must go to both Director, Michael Weber and Choreographer, Tammy Mader for the finesse and polish they brought to this performance. Their contributions certainly help this show stand-out as one to watch.

What I didn't like

For me, the conclusion was too abrupt and not strong enough given all that the audience experienced prior.

And perhaps it is easy for me to say, but this piece probably should be longer. While it is absolutely impossible to share an entire performer’s life story at all, let alone one hour, an additional 30-minutes might go a long way and help provide a more climatic, satisfying finale.

My overall impression

What a powerful solo entry at the Hollywood Fringe by triple-threat performer, Kayla Boye! Having previously participated in 2022’s HFF as Elizabeth Taylor, this time around, she tackles Hollywood’s Golden Era dancer-extraordinaire: Ann Miller. This particular show encompasses bits of Miller’s biography with a fair amount of tap dancing and musical theatre numbers. So for those that enjoy her work, this will be a crowd pleaser.

With a simple black director’s chair on-stage, vibrant lighting design, a sexy leotard/skirt costume and sound design work from Frank Ferrante (as the Auctioneer), this show is a refined, entertaining hour.
