I appreciated that the language of the play was in Korean with English subtitles and the live musical accompaniment which helped set the tone throughout the play. Both actresses’ performances were compelling. I was able to see the age differences portrayed through each character’s physicality. Aubrey Kim’s playful and young-spirited No-eul was a great contrast to Karla Kim’s Soon-deok who clearly lived through trauma expressed in her posture amd movement. I want to recognize Joseph Hwang’s commanding voice and Charis Kim’s percussion that both heightened a moment in the play.
What I didn't like
If anything, I wish there was more. Amazing show.
My overall impression
To Be Liberated was one of the more unique theater experiences for me. It was like watching an arthouse, foreign film, period piece with high stakes drama. It’s a relatively short and it left me wanting more.
