What I liked

With powerful acting, live music, and a grounded simplicity to these two Korean women talking about their joy & complex feelings about liberation from their Japanese occupiers, this is fringe theatre done well that makes people want more.

What I didn't like

The conflict of Soon-deok’s betrayal could be deepened further where she sold out to the Japanese occupation entirely in order to survive as opposed to being a matter of her religious faith and bowing to the shinto gods under duress. This gives it a much larger conflict and a larger moment of catharsis for the end.

My overall impression

For a 30 minute preview of what is constructed to be a larger piece, the HFF presentation of To Be Liberated is an extremely promising start for things to come.
