What I liked

I marvel at the utter transformation that Viñas makes to become Dietrich! Whether it is her accent/dialect work, singing, or physicality, Viñas captures her subject marvelously. Her fantastic sense of comical timing shines as she casually discusses her many lovers (of both sexes). When it comes to singing, all three of the songs she tackled are hypnotic, especially the most well known one, “Falling in Love Again.”

Additionally, Viñas’ writing is every bit as good as her acting. Dietrich’s tear jerking moments are devastating. Whether it comes to making her mother proud or discussing the rift with her daughter Maria, the dialogue packs a gut-punch.

Special praise must go to Viñas for compiling all the movie clips/images, finding just the right sound effects and music, and costuming herself like Dietrich. These design elements helped set the tone and atmosphere perfectly.

What I didn't like

I honestly cannot think of one thing to improve. Queen of the World is a magnum opus of solo work.

My overall impression

Queen of the World: An Evening with Marlene Dietrich is, in two words, masterpiece theatre. I am unfamiliar with Ivette Viñas or her previous work, but this solo show is at another level! Just like the subject of her show who engrossed fans worldwide, Viñas is utterly captivating in her portrayal.

The entire show is a series of conversations that Dietrich, fresh from a live performance, has with her book writer, Johnny (unseen). She sits at her dressing room table, applying make-up and weaving a tale about her sexual adventures, co-stars, and family.

As certain names are discussed, their images (mostly vintage movie clips) are projected on the wall. These visual collages of events, people, and the real Dietrich herself, sell the show. They offer historical information about her early years, rise to fame, and goings-on during World War II.
