My overall impression

Lurch!!! OMG.

I wish I had the cast names to compliment more specifically, but I’ll do my best to let you know who you are.

The character of Lurch was portrayed phenomenally. Just … great physical comedy in its simplicity. I don’t think I caught the guy blink once. Great commitment.

Now, here’s I guess why I give the show a like it, not love it … the actress who played … um … the voluptuous woman – the first housekeepr – and um … the one from the 70s? From the Jeffersons I guess? You. You were also really, really wonderful. She has pipes and a natural flair that carries her musical numbers from start to finish. She was also very impressive.

But we see where the problem lies.

The characters in this show come right out of the legendary sitcoms that probably most people can recognize. And I’d say I got about 80% of the references. The show is totally for a certain audience – a certain American audience – a certain American audience who watched a lot of TV growing up – and for us, it’s like watching a Family Guy episode where they interview a whole bunch of maids from TV shows who sing a musical number.

So, in that way, the show was a little disconnected (as will be this review).

But they sounded excellent. I seriously think the album would do really, really well, much in the way that an album full of TV show theme songs would sell.

Everybody was funny playing out their one-dimensional characters who could be plugged right into a tv sitcom. A couple of the jokes were just overplayed – the gay best friend giving gay best friend advice, and the horny kid talking about horny he is … the jokes didn’t get funnier each time, is all I’m saying.

I don’t have any idea who the clown was, but she was a hilarious character in drag. Her song was definitely my favorite of the show, and I’ve had it in my head since yesterday. The art of manipulation was explained beautifully. Very great character work.

I’d also like to acknowledge our leading lady – I thought she was wonderful. Though I would have enjoyed an even more interesting character, I thought the actress who portrayed her gave an excellent range and sang beautifully.

All in all, very fun for the right crowd.
