What I liked
Sondheim typically demands a lot from the audience, and selling a collection of out-of-context B sides is no small feat. The two vocalists add authenticity and emotional meaning to each song, despite the lack of literal narrative. Stage blocking and direction constantly add variety of movement and situation, making each song feel like its own moment. I particularly appreciated the one number where the male member of the duo showed off his lower vocal register.
What I didn't like
Acoustics and lyrical clarity are sometimes a challenge. Probably best for those who appreciate Sondheim.
My overall impression
A well-performed and thoughtfully-directed presentation of Sondheim’s trunk songs. Fans of the composer’s work will enjoy these deep cuts.
