Yousaf is a masterful storyteller. He paints each scene with such vivid detail that you feel like you’re sitting at the lunch table, loitering in the hallway, and eavesdropping on every whispered secret of his freshman year. His ability to embody such a wide range of characters—from his sharply observant teenage self to his wise and lovable uncle—makes the whole story sing. Every character is grounded and specific, but also hilariously and heartbreakingly universal. I especially loved the moments where we saw the world through his uncle’s eyes—those bits felt magical, almost like a compass guiding the younger Yousaf through identity, culture, and the chaos of adolescence.
What I didn't like
No notes. Beautifully told and skillfully performed.
My overall impression
Natural Born Citizen is a heartfelt, funny, and deeply resonant solo show that should absolutely not be missed. It’s a coming-of-age story layered with cultural nuance, political awakening, and a hilariously misguided student government campaign. With warmth and wit, Yousaf brings the immigrant experience into sharp focus without ever losing the teenage angst and awkwardness that makes it universally relatable. This powerful story brings the audience together and keeps you rooting for Yousaf’s success even after the show has ended. Do yourself a favor—SEE THISSHOW!
