Jessica Mele brought her full self, not the empty husk of a woman who was sucked dry by pumping breast milk, but her badass, all-powerful, witty, wry, rageful, and clear personhood, to gift us her story at the Hudson Guild. Her inclusion of a variety of storytelling frameworks, including the hilarious recipe for Bitter Loaf, participation by game audience members roleplaying her husband and herself, and a detective-style interrogation of her parental bona fides kept the piece newly energetic at every turn. This was everything I needed as a child-free person to validate my life choices, and it still managed to be poignant and touching in the parts where Jessica embraces the depth of her humanity that has come alive with raising her son. Brilliant and fun!
What I didn't like
Mama needs to develop this for film/TV please!
My overall impression
A well-crafted and hilarious trip through the black hole of pregnancy and early motherhood
