The entire concept of this show is enthralling! Burlesque/vaudeville shows are rarities in today’s time, but they are so much fun. And to get to see one at HFF, with a natural-born performer who knows her way around the nuances of the genre… well, count yourself lucky.
From her costume to her conversation, Woznicki with her red lipstick and over-articulated jargon is au naturale at seduction. She proved this throughout SMUT as she interacted with multiple audience members to the delight of all. Of course, all participants had to know her favorite C-word, “CONSENT” before playing.
In the penultimate moments of the show, Woznicki abandons Entendre for self-reflection on past behaviors. And then, at the end, Entendre is back to sing the infamous “Let Me Entertain You” to thunderous applause. End Scene.
Recognition to Director, Rachel Resnik, for fine tuning this piece into a true work of art.
What I didn't like
My opinion, but the show sans the personal self-reflection section is still a FANTASTIC show! Because Entendre is such a well-refined character, Brynn’s confessions, while extremely meaningful, seem to come out of left field when introduced. Just riffing out loud…
My overall impression
Anyone looking for a titillating solo show with a philosophical poetess need look no further. In Smut with Entendre Entendre, performer Bryn Woznicki presents a deliciously bawdy burlesque play avec un accent français. Clad in the appropriate sensual lingerie, Entendre sings, dances, recites and beguiles the audience in just an hour’s time.
In earnest moments discussing how “everything is about sex except sex,” Entendre discusses power plays as she flirts with audience members. This dominatrix knows what she likes and how she likes it. As such, it is impossible not to enjoy what she is throwing down.
Ooh la la, ma petite! This is a sultry solo venture if ever there was one.
