Authentic storytelling through clever transitions from childhood to adulthood. The writing and acting were excellent and I could really imagine what it was like for Dee to grow up in rural Pennsylvania. While the play was about a serious topic, there were also moments of humor and levity which I think perfectly captures the experiences of someone who is either first/second generation.
What I didn't like
In the high school portion of Dee’s life, Dee is called into the principal’s office because of an issue that involved a teacher that lied about Dee’s behavior. The principal seems to be both supportive of the teacher but also tells Dee that she will ensure the teacher doesn’t interact with him again. It left me wanting to understand more about those complex dynamics.
My overall impression
Fresh take on growing up mixed race in rural America. While there are stories about growing up in America as an outsider, Dee’s story was uniquely his and provided a new story that I had not heard before.
