What I liked
The show!
What I didn't like
The script is not one of Shakespeare’s (or some mystery Elizabethan’s) strongest works but that’s all the more reason to see it, in a way.
My overall impression
Much of the Shakespearean canon has been done so many times, and so famously, that actors and directors will inevitably be influenced by prior interpretations for good or ill. But with a show seen as rarely as this one, you have to go your own way! The Porters’ cutting is smartly done and well paced. The direction is sharp and the acting is passionate, skillful and clear. The black box setting doesn’t limit the production but draws your attention to the text. This is a perfect way to see Edward III for any Shakespeare completist.
