Excellent work by the actors under fine direction. Great use of language – both the contemporary language of write David Ives and the 19th century source material. It’s great fun to watch the competition, with wins and losses scored, between the characters
What I didn't like
A small quibble:Vocal clarity of both actors – obviously skilled performers who know how to use language, but in places, especially early in the play, lines sped to mumbled endings. The current habit of young stage actors to drop the energy, commitment, and articulation of their final words/phrases
My overall impression
A powerful two-hander that draws in the audience with power-dynamic switches, secrets revealed and multiple play-within-a-play twists. The actors in their various roles are strong and specific, switching sometimes line to line, with physical and vocal subtleties.. Guided by veteran and gifted director Amir Korangy, the play moves briskly and incisively in a bare theatre, as an “audition” proves to be something much darker and disturbing
